Beagle Channel

The Basics

Most travelers experience this part of the world on multi-day cruises from Ushuaia to Punta Arenas in Chile, and it’s also a fantastic location for whale watching and spotting glaciers (the area is nicknamed Glacier Alley). Those based in Ushuaia can experience the channel in multiple ways; paddle a canoe from Lapataia Bay, sail through on a sightseeing cruise by yacht or catamaran, or explore some of the islands, including rocky islets known for their nesting seabirds or Seal Island.

Absolutely wonderful experience and must-see when you go to Ushuaia. The company was very organized and our guide Christian was very knowledgable, enthusiastic and kind. He taught us a lot about the history, wildlife and indigenous communities. We even spotted 5 whales in the harbor unexpectedly and our captain did his very best to get as close as possible without disturbing them. Would definitely recommend!

Canoeing Adventure on the Beagle Channel and Penguin Colony
One of the absolute best tours we've ever taken! The guides were amazing. We learned so much from them about the history of Gable Island. The lunch was incredible. The canoeing, the penguins, the hike- all of it felt like we were in a dream. Would highly recommend this tour to anyone once the world reopens again (we were their last tour before the world shut down).

Beagle Channel Sailing and short trek in Small Groups
We were told to show up at 9 o’clock for a 930 tour. No reason to get there more than five minutes early if you are already booked and pre-paid as we were. Tour did not actually leave until 10. Viator, you need to change your Information on timing. Felt like we wasted an hour. Other than that, a very good experience. If you are a cruise ship passenger, you do not need to pay a Port tax. When they give you your boarding ticket, they may neglect to tell you, and instead send you to an office to pay the tax, so make sure to tell them. That said, the guys running the ship did an excellent job handling the boat and delivering clear, detailed, and interesting information about the wildlife and the indigenous people. Tour was nearly 4 hours which was plenty of time. We happened to get incredibly lucky with a picture perfect, calm, sunny day. Tea, coffee, and hot cocoa with cookies and a taste of a locally produced Liquor was a nice touch.

The Lighthouse (Not Quite) at the End of the World

Many tours through the Beagle Channel include a visit to Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse, sometimes called the Lighthouse at the End of the World. While the photogenic lighthouse certainly feels far enough from civilization to warrant the nickname, the title actually applies to a lighthouse on Isla de los Estados.
