Perito Moreno Glacier

Ruta 11, El Calafate, Argentina

The Basics

One of the most accessible ice fields on the planet, Perito Moreno sits at the top of many travelers’ must-see list in Patagonia. While many visitors are content to stay on solid ground and observe the ice from a series of platforms across the Iceberg Channel (Canal de los Tempanos) from the glacier, more adventurous travelers can explore the inlet on a boat tour, or don crampons and head out onto the ever-shifting ice field itself. The Glaciarium, located in El Calafate, serves as an excellent introduction to the science of glaciers.

Perfect First Day
We had an amazing experience! The tour guide was so informative, and it was a great first day in El Calafate and the Glacier Park. She spoke English very well. It is the perfect amount of time. We opted to not do the boat ride as it was part of another tour during our trip, but it was very good.

This was an amazing once in a lifetime experience. You cannot miss out on it if you are in El Calafate. The guides are incredible as well and very accommodating and knowledgeable. Usually I’m not a fan of pre booking excursions but make sure you do as it fills up so quickly!

Full Day Tour to Perito Moreno Glacier with Navigation
I really enjoyed this tour. The guide was very informed. The boat trip was first for a great up-close view of the glacier. Then we had enough free time at the north side viewpoints to have lunch and hike to many viewpoints.

Perito Moreno Glacier Day Trip with Optional Boat Ride from El Calafate
Such a great experience. Huellas del Sur was a great tour company, very prompt, communicative, and accomodating. Really appreciate the service was above and beyond. And our tour guide was such a gem of a human - she was incredibly knowledgeable about El Calafate and the glacier and managed the transition between English and Spanish for giving the tour in both languages in a magnificent manner! She was just incredibly nice and very passionate. And the glacier speaks for itself when you get there. The optional boat tour was a definite plus!

A bit longer

Full Day Perito Moreno Glacier Park with Optional Boat Safari ride
everything was OK including weather. Only one thing was not really satisfied - a little bit longer time at the front of glacier. I can only imagine how it looks near sunset. Be there until 6 PM or even 7 PM (especially in spring and fall) will be special experiences. The tour can start later in the case of longer staying in the park, e.g. from 11 AM to 6/7 PM

To see a really big part of the glacier tearing off and thewalk on the glacier. Very impressive to be on the boat and to be pretty close to the glacier wall.

How to Get to Perito Moreno Glacier

El Calafate, a town about 50 miles (80 kilometers) from the glacier, is served by El Calafate International Airport, with regular service from cities in Argentina and Chile. While a vast majority of visitors head to the glacier as part of a guided tour, once you're in El Calafate, you can catch a bus to the glacier (as well as other points in Los Glaciares National Park).

When to Get There

Summer in Argentina (wintter in the Northern Hemisphere) is the most popular time to visit the glacier, as the weather is warmest. While temperatures cool down in October, March, and April, the tradeoffs are sparser crowds and a more peaceful environment for communing with Mother Nature. If you travel between May and August, expect frequent rain and average temperatures around 36° F (2° C).

Hear the Thunder

One of the most magical experiences at Perito Moreno Glacier is hearing the thunderous crack of ice as a berg is birthed into the channel. This glacier is one of the best places from which to take in the phenomenon. It happens most frequently on sunny days in the late afternoon after the sun has had time to warm the ice.
